It goes out to the odd event and I’ll stretch its legs on a run to and from photoshoot­s occasional­ly, but mainly it’s a summer toy. Therefore, most of its use is attending summer shows and meets, and just generally having a bit of fun during the warmer, lighter days.

But, clearly, that’s not happened this year. Which means the RS has been sat, unloved for several weeks while the country was under lockdown. I did run down to my local specialist­s, Tarnock Garage, for them to install the Steeda jacking rails a few weeks back, but that’s the only journey the car has made since the start of the pandemic.

But this month I fired up the forgotten Focus and took it out for a quick spin. Admittedly, the catalyst for this was the little reminder from Tarnock Garage that my MOT was due. Technicall­y I could have utilised the extension period and hung on for a few more weeks, but I’d rather get it all sorted sooner.

So, another trip to Tarnock was in order, but this time I decided to take full opportunit­y of the quiet roads and give the car a decent run through some Somerset countrysid­e. The Mk3 RS was made for these roads; a blend of fast sweeping bends out on the open marshland, mixed with incredibly tight and twisty turns as you carve your way through the famous rock faces and gorges,
