WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

-

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO INSURE?

You might be pleasantly surprised. In terms of crashing and theft, an XR3i cabrio is no longer the massive risk that insurers recall from the 1990s, but you’ll need to consult a specialist in classic cars – not just for a competitive price but to ensure you’ll be paid out an agreed value if you ever need to claim.

WHERE DO I FIND ONE?

Most Cabriolets are found online – on eBay and Facebook groups – but it’s best to check with the owners’ clubs for any Escorts potentially on sale by word of mouth. Specialist dealers and classic car auctions are essential to check for low-mileage/concours cars.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN?

The XR3i’s fuel-injected CVH is really quite frugal if maintenance isn’t overlooked, and service items are extremely cheap (apart from EFi air filters). Only when you need Cabriospecific parts (such as hood mechanisms) will you find high prices – but, even then, you’ll not be subjected to RS tax.

WILL VALUES RISE OR FALL?

They’re going up, without a shadow of doubt. As prices of hard-top XR3is increase and supplies run low, buyers are seeking Cabriolets as the next best thing. A mint limited-edition is one to keep.

SHOULD I MODIFY IT?

Yes – as long as you stick to mild upgrades of mechanical components. Better brakes, dampers and suspension bushes will improve every summer outing, and even a ZVH or Zetec engine is tempting. But avoid blinging up the bodywork or cabin, and if you’ve an All White or All Blue rarity, leave well alone.
