Kepa Arrizabalaga’s issues are numerous and known by all, but Lampard’s only other option has been Willy Caballero – suspect, and nearing 40. We’ve seen Lampard try it all, from 4- 3- 3 to the wing- back game plan that won Antonio Conte the title in 2016- 17. Chelsea are still attempting to establish an identity under the young manager – vital if they’re to emerge from transition and become contenders again. Lampard will have an array of different attacking options this season, and must be wary of engaging in too much tinkering.

Willian left on a free transfer after seven years’ service, as Chelsea were unwilling to budge on a two- year contract offer. His 2019- 20 featured nine league goals and seven assists, so there’s a void to fill. Lampard has integrated young talent to great effect. The final league game of 2019- 20 featured five graduates, with Mason Mount scoring a wonderful free- kick. Now the transfer ban has been lifted and Chelsea are unafraid of spending, the boss must give new up- and- coming prospects the opportunities that others have enjoyed. It’s the fabric of this current Chelsea crop.
