REFRESH THE ATTACK

- COVER UP IN DEFENCE ROUND PEGS, MEET ROUND HOLES USE THE POWER OF RICARDO STOP WILF SHOOTING

Vardy is clearly Leicester’s focal point, but much more is expected of the supporting cast. Rodgers has professed the need for “more creativity and quality” going forward, which figures: Harvey Barnes’ form nosedived from February, Ayoze Perez netted in only five league games, and Kelechi Iheanacho and Demarai Gray were – are – extremely frustrating. Leicester were bereft of ideas in the run- in.

Leicester’s lack of depth beyond Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans was exposed when they switched to a back three and lost Soyuncu to a naive suspension, leaving them with a 36- year- old Wes Morgan and the panic- loanee that was Ryan Bennett. Rodgers will need to avoid such measures with a European campaign ahead.

That means not asking Perez to play in an awkward wide position, and keeping creative hub James Maddison in the middle whenever possible. Leicester, and Vardy in particular, look far better when the former Norwich playmaker stays central, and they will depend on him to kick- start their new campaign after injury. If anyone can solve their creative problems, it’s Maddison.

There’s no shame in your best player being a full- back. Leicester lost Ricardo Pereira to an ACL injury in March, and with him went their driving force down the right. It was a huge blow – though it did at least remove him from the shop window – and the Foxes will welcome him back in October. The 26- year- old would slot seamlessly into most top sides.

Wilfred Ndidi is a smashing defensive midfielder who made the second- most tackles in the Premier League last season, having topped that chart in 2018- 19. However, he shoots as if his feet are sewn on backwards. Over the past three seasons, 122 attempts have brought four goals. That’s a lot of wasted attacks.
