FALLEN KINGS
Forest became the first ex- European champions to drop into the third tier – but others have suffered after glory
MILAN
The Rossoneri were twice European Cup champions when they were demoted for match- fixing in 1980, despite coming third. They returned to Serie A within a year, then got relegated again ( this time for being rubbish), then won Serie B again – aided by goals from Joe Jordan.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Six years after tasting European Cup glory in 1968, United went down but bounced back at their first try, winning the Second Division title under Tommy Docherty. The Red Devils’ average crowd in 1974- 75 ( 47,781) was still the highest in the land.
MARSEILLE
L’OM were Ligue 1 runners- up in 1994 but demoted after scandalous revelations of match- fixing from the previous season came to light – a year where they’d lifted the Champions League trophy. Marseille swiftly won the second tier title and even got to keep their place in the UEFA Cup.
ASTON VILLA
The Villans bagged the European Cup in 1982 – five years later, they were rock bottom of the First Division but returned to the top tier at the first attempt. It took the Midlanders three seasons to recover after another drop in 2016 – they finished as low as 13th in the Championship.
JUVENTUS
Yet more scandal – the Old Lady, twice continental kings, were ready for another crack at European glory in 2006, only to be stripped of their Serie A title and also relegated for their role in Calciopoli. They won Serie B ahead of fellow giants Napoli.
HAMBURG
The 1983 European Cup conquerors had never been relegated before succumbing in 2018 – four years later they’re still in the second tier, having lost a play- off this May to a Hertha Berlin side led by former Rothosen gaffer Felix Magath. Scheisse.
