Deep techno beats with hardware and software

Pablo combines analogue sources with digital processors. Here’s how he put together the track’s beats

For Encore Une Fois, Pablo takes a different approach to his normal MO: “In this track I use an audio kick drum. Normally I’d use Sampler so I can change the sound, but in this case I really liked the first sound I used.” Pablo uses EQ Eight to accentuate the analogue noise in the kick track’s high-end.

Toms are added next, and these are high-passed with EQ Eight to cut out their low-end. The track uses three separate clap tracks, the first of which features a Drum Rack with three Simpler instruments that are triggered with slightly different timing to give the sound an organic movement.

Pablo uses a return track with a Lexicon Hall effect on it to apply reverb to certain instances of the clap, and also runs an Auto Filter on the track which is automated to open up and make the clap brighter. The two other clap parts are audio tracks which play different rhythms

The first clap is Auto Filtered, with LFO modulation of the cutoff, and reverbed with the Lexicon, and the second of these audio clap tracks is widened with Waves Stereo S1 Imager delayed with Waves H-Delay. Both tracks are also autopanned to move them around the stereo panorama.

The shaker track is a loop from a sample library, high-passed to cut out the low frequencies with EQ Eight, which is supplemented in the highs with a couple of hats from the Analog Rytm which are sidechain-compressed via the kick, EQed with the Waves PuigTec EQP-1A, and autopanned.

A third ‘noise’ hat is created with the Analog Rytm’s noise generator. Its amp envelope’s decay time is modulated, and the signal is autopanned. The final high element is a sampled Roland TR-909 ride loop Pablo created previously. “You can see I like the classics – I like the origins of techno music!” he enthuses.
