Making Milambi’s stunning hardware synth sounds

Pablo calls on his small but powerful arsenal of synths to create Milambi’s stabs, sweeps and arps

“For the main synth sound I went to my most favourite instrument of all, the Sequential OB6,” begins Pablo. “I already had the MIDI which I sent out to the synthesisers, and I tried it out with some different sounds. Using the hardware means I can morph the sound continuously with the synth controls, which makes it sound very alive.”

Pablo picks a sawtooth-y stab patch to play the part back with, and layers it up with another patch from the same synth to enhance its texture. Later on in the tracks these two layers are joined by a third layer, a big sub from the same synth.

The track’s synth sweep comes from another Sequential synth, the Mopho x4. “This synth was my very first love, I used to have it on every gig and play it in every project, but now it’s a bit old!” Pablo reveals. He uses a long release time and filter cutoff frequency modulation to create the sweeping effect.

Pablo employs the Korg Minilogue to create another subtle synth sweep, utilising its onboard delay effect to give the part a tape echo-style feel. The track’s arp layers were also created with the Minilogue, using its built-in arpeggiator.
