Filter Fundamentals
The humble filter is arguably the true cornerstone of electronic music production. Classic VCF designs like Moog’s transistor ladder or Dave Smith’s Curtis filter have defined the sound of their creators’ synth lines and remain much sought after decades on from their introduction. In standalone or software form too, filters are used to sculpt mixes, create FX and add character. In short, knowing your way around a filter is essential if you want to master sound design and craft killer tracks.
In this issue’s cover feature, we’re going in deep on the studio science behind filtering.
