In the studio with Steve Cobby

“The studio was in the city centre of Hull, in a Georgian townhouse. We had a good suite of equipment with a good MIDI loom going on. There were lots of things running live. We were driving the desk on a lot of mixes and just running things to DAT. Then we’d chop the good bits together. This was all pre-digital.

“We had a couple of ‘get rounds’. We’d record the track on one side of the DAT, and then we’d play on the other side, flying bits back into the Akai S1100 sampler, and then re-flying them in over the track. We didn’t have any multitrack recording so it was pretty difficult to get the organic stuff in there.

“We had a lot of synths running live. It was great walking over to stuff and tweaking it. We had a Prophet 600, the Korg MS-10, running on a CV gate, and the Korg DW-8000 got hammered. The Cheetah MS6, that I loved, produced the fattest analogue sounds, as well.”
