Four years on from his last solo album, No Better Time than Now, Zachary Saginaw releases his most diverse and ambitious Shigeto record yet on Ghostly International. The New Monday sees the dynamic producer shifting into a more dancefloor-orientated sound. His trademark jazzy textures, abstract excursions and sophisticated musicality is still there, but is fused together with more bass-driven elements than ever before. Inspired by his move back to Michigan after several years in Brooklyn, Saginaw straddles house, techno, footwork, jazz and hip hop in what feels like a love letter to the rich heritage of Detroit’s ever-evolving music scene. The record shares the same expansive, forward-thinking outlook as No Better Time... and The New Monday sees Saginaw traversing genres, tempos and atmospheres with confidence and ingenuity.
