Cytomic’s Andrew Simper goes deeper into modulation via sidechaining. “Any audio signal can be also be used as modulation source. The amplitude of the audio signal can be further processed to obtain a trigger signal, and this can be used to reset envelopes, LFOs, and step sequencers and so impart the rhythm of the audio source on the modulation. For interesting modulation shapes you can detune some audio, which will slow the wobbles down until you can hear each part of the waveform. The opposite approach is to speed up an LFO or step sequencer until it becomes so fast it becomes an oscillator.”
