Getting to grips with Player Devices
Reason 9 gave us Player Devices – a whole new class of device designed specifically to handle MIDI note data. You may have seen similar devices in other DAWs, but Propellerhead have made sure that Reason’s three included Player Devices – Note Echo, Scales & Chords and Dual Arpeggio – give you a little bit more functionality than you may get elsewhere.
Player Devices are designed to pop straight into the rack before any instrument. They can be chained together to create more complex effects – an obvious example being to run a Scales & Chords device into the Dual Arpeggiator, giving you instant riffs just by holding down one MIDI note.
In a first for Reason devices, there’s nothing ’round the back, but there’s a lot going on at the front. Reason’s Player Devices come with a few presets too, which do a great job of showing off the sorts of wild effects you can make before even touching an instrument or effect – who knew MIDI could be such an inspirational tool?
