QUICK TIPS

-

1

Quantising provides timing correction to sequences recorded in real time. Make sure you explore any extended parameter options though, including ‘Quantise Strength’. This lets you ‘partially’ correct timing without making every part sound stepsequenced. A Strength value of 50% will move each recorded note halfway between a live performance and ‘the grid’, for example.

2

If you want to apply a classic step sequencer sound to a part you’ve recorded, set all velocities and note lengths to the same value, as well as selecting 100% quantise. Early sequencers could only be programmed one step at a time and they existed before MIDI data, so keep things as simple as possible.

3

MIDI pitch offsets of +/-12 allow you to quickly experiment with trying parts out an octave higher or lower. Would that lead sound be better doubled up the octave? Find out.
