The Business of Dance

- By Catilan Charles

Tash Schuddeboom fell in love with dance at the age of three. For the past six years she has poured that enthusiasm into teaching her craft to others under the guidance of Jen Dalton, the owner of Jigsaw Dance.

“At 14 I said ‘I want to teach’ and Jen has been mentoring me ever since. It’s so exciting and I want to learn as much as I can,” Schudderboom said. Now at the age of only 19, Dalton is backing Schuddeboom’s ability, enthusiasm and developing business mind by appointing her head teacher at their new studio in Wahroonga. Dalton said when the opportunity to open a new studio came up, Tash was the obvious choice.

“Tash is dedicated, passionate, good with children, and wants to share her love of dancing with others,” said Dalton. Schuddeboom hopes to help young dancers develop their skills and find their passion. But it’s not just the dance that drives her, she is excited about running her own business.

“It’s always been a dream of mine. I love doing the business side and being able to create new ideas. With this I am also able to have a bit of freedom and implement some of my own ideas while also being mentored by Jen [Dalton],” she said. “I want to gain as much knowledge as I can around business and teaching as well.”

Ultimatley, it is the 19‐year‐old’s intention to combine her love of dance and a keen interest in business to make the studio a success.

That keen interest began back in school and culminated in becoming a finalist in the 2014 Dural Chamber of Commerce’s Young Business Mind of the year.

Currently studying a Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management, Schuddeboom is preparing herself for running the studio and teaching all the classes.
