Asingle large container stuffed with flowers, grasses or succulents is enough to transform an outdoor space from drab to fab.

This arrangement features a mix of scented, textured and brilliantly hued plants that will bush out over coming months, and provide a sensory delight through spring and into summer.

We used a plain, glazed ceramic pot, 52cm in diameter, but you could opt for something more decorative or rustic – there’s terracotta, timber, wine barrels and many other types of container to experiment with.

Fill your container with the best potting mix you can afford, to keep your flowers powering on. A pot this size will take three or four 25L bags. Some mixes are available in larger bags, which can save you a bit of money.

Likewise, we have used large plants here for an instant result, but you can save more money by using smaller plants, and watching them grow to fill the space.

All the plants you need for this pot are listed at right. In the subtropics and tropics, swap out certain plants that dislike humidity (see list below).

Follow our care and maintenance tips (overpage), and your pot should last for many months. We hope you enjoy this quarterly series and discover for yourself the difference a big, beautiful seasonal pot makes in your garden.
