BORERS IN TREES

-

Once a deciduous tree has lost its leaves, it’s much easier to see what’s going on in the trunk and branches. Inspect branch junctions and open the branch surface to check for holes made by borers, or for debris, called frass, expelled by these burrowers. Often, these signs are more evident after rain. Clear out suspect holes and poke in a piece of strong wire in an attempt to skewer the pest. Fertilise the tree with slow-release pellets, and water well when it shows new growth in spring.
