Ansett plans second stoush

EIGHT years after they first duelled for Windermere, Cameron Granger and Tony Ansett have resumed hostilities for the northern Geelong seat.

After stepping down from the council in 2008 for personal reasons — paving the way f or Cr Granger to take office — two-term councillor Mr Ansett is back.

He also wants to become deputy mayor, meaning he wants not only Cr Granger’s seat but also the position the incumbent has held for the past two years.

Since announcing his intentions in February, Mr Ansett has secured favourable preference deals to aid him.

He has the support of 19- year- old Ashleigh Hill, an RMIT marketing student who has directed her preferences in a similar manner to the former councillor.

Ms Hill’s support is clear: she, along with her sister and mother, are among the 194 members of the open Facebook group Tony Ansett Standing for Council.

Greens candidate Georgie Trimble, who is focused on public transport and improving cyc- ling and pedestrian links, has a 1-2 preference deal with Mr Ansett.

A family element has been added to the political rivalry, with Liberal member and former party state candidate Robert Eyton in the race alongside his i ndependent niece, Kylie Grzybek.

While blood runs thicker than their differing views— with the pair trading preferences — the latter is the only can-

didate who has placed Cr Granger higher than his main rival.

However, there are several serious chances, with Windermere voters arguably more spoiled for choice than any other Geelong ward.

Voters have already heard directly from candidates, with about 110 taking the opportunity at a forum organised by the Lara and Little River Rural Action Group.
