City high on menu

- DANNY LANNEN

HUNGRY children will benefit from food rescue organisation FareShare escalating its commitment to Geelong.

The organisation already transports nutritious fare from its Abbotsford kitchen to Geelong schools and charity food outlets, but plans to double its overall output from 500,000 meals a year to one million from mid-2013.

FareShare chief executive Marcus Godinho said yesterday the organisation converted surplus food to good use and Geelong figured strongly on its radar.

Deliveries this week alone to Geelong have included 1120 casseroles, 5100 fruit yoghurts, 250 dozen eggs and 230 litres of milk.

As w e l l g o i n g t o schools, including Belmont’s Oberon South primary, in support of a healthy breakfast program, the food goes to outlets such as SalvoConnect, Outpost and Geelong Food Relief Centre.

‘ ‘ There’s far more surplus quality food available to charities in Victoria than there is need for charities to help with food assistance,’’ Mr Godinho said.

‘‘It’s a matter of logistics, getting the food from where it is available to charities and then storing the food.’’

The Geelong Advertiser Feed Geelong campaign, in partnership with FareShare and Give Where You Live, is raising money to help charities better deal with l o g i s t i c s and storage issues.

Give Where You Live chief executive Bill Mithen h a i l e d t h e appeal and the FareShare’s mission in Geelong.

‘‘With 23 per cent of households in Geelong earning $500 a week or less, food security is a growing i ssue,’’ Mr Mithen said.
