Enright in line for sixth all-star team
GEELONG stalwart Corey Enright is in line to join great mate and current Cats assistant coach Matthew Scarlett as a six-time All-Australian after being named in the AFL 40-man squad yesterday.
Scarlett is the only Cat to have been named All-Australian six times, having been given the honour in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
Enright has previously been named in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
In 21 games this season, the 34-year-old has averaged 14.2 kicks, 5.9 marks and 9.6 handballs per game and finished the season with 73 rebound 50s and 58 tackles. He broke the Geelong games record against the Western Bulldogs in Round 19 and is considered a possibility to play on in 2017 for an 18th season.
Enright will be contending with former Geelong Falcon Jasper Pittard as well as Heath Shaw, Matthew Boyd and Carlton backmen Sam Docherty and Kade Simpson for one of the small defender positions in the All-Australian team.
He was one of three Geelong players named in the squad yesterday, with captain Joel Selwood and midfield counterpart Patrick Dangerfield also selected.
Dangerfield is considered a certainty to be named for his fourth AllAustralian guernsey on Thursday night when the squad is cut to 22, while Selwood will be competing with the likes of Rory Sloane, Sam Mitchell, Dustin Martin and Andrew Gaff for what would be his fifth AllAustralian jumper.
Collingwood skipper Scott Pendlebury and Sydney champion forward Lance Franklin will also be vying for a sixth All-Australian selection.
Adelaide led the way with six players nominated, while Brisbane and Essendon missed out.
Melbourne’s Max Gawn is all but guaranteed a spot as the starting ruckman, with no other recognised big man named other than Josh Jenkins, who will be competing for one of the key forward posts.
