Dangerfield on panel as Carson picked to coach Anglesea
FORMER Mathieson medallist Paul Carson has been named senior coach at Anglesea.
Carson (right) replaces Jason Armistead, who took the Roos to the finals in each of his two years at the helm.
The former VFL and GFL star, who played in St Joseph’s 2015 premiership side before moving to GDFL club Inverleigh in 2016, kicked 86 goals this year and helped the Hawks to a third-place finish.
However, Anglesea president Peter Gowans said Carson would be a non-playing coach, and was ecstatic to have someone of his quality join the club.
Gowans praised Carson’s enthusiasm and football knowledge. “Hopefully he is going to transfer all of that into our juniors and our young squad,” he said.
Anglesea pulled out the big guns to help find its new coach, with Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield joining former Geelong rover Andrew Bews on the selection panel with Gowans and Sam Bouwman.
Gowans hinted that Bews would be spending more time at Alcoa Oval in 2017, and said despite a young list the Roos were not far away from being a genuine premiership contender.
“We’ve got a very, very young side but I think we’re not that far away,” he said. “We finished third last year and we went out in straight sets but he (Carson) has been around senior football for so long.”
Gowans also said that Jared Stanley would take the reins as Colts coach from next year.
