Mixed results in jobs figures

-

A RISE in job vacancies is good news for jobseekers, but it has not been matched with strong growth in the amount of work being done.

Vacancies have been trending higher for almost three years ago, according to a survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

But based on averages of monthly employment data, the number of people with a job has risen only 4.6 per cent since vacancies started rising. That suggests many vacancies are the result of turnover rather than growth — in other words, jobs are being vacated rather than created.
