McFarlane local hope for veterans crown

-

BARWON Valley star Ross McFarlane will chase a seventh consecutive veterans state golf championship at The Sands on Monday.

McFarlane, who has won seven of the past eight titles, is one of about 200 golfers that will compete in the event over 36 holes at the Torquay course.

Geelong District Veteran Golfers Association captain Brian Hazell said hosting the championship was a huge honour for the region.

“We were asked to put a submission for it and The Sands were able to help us. It means we are able to play it on a championship course,” Hazell said.

“There are just some really good golfers coming from the state. They’re coming from Heywood, Ballarat, Devilbend . . . all over the place.

“The state championship is just brilliant and we are stoked to host it. It showcases the area and what we can do for golfers down this way.

“This has been 12 months in the making and we just can’t wait for it to start now.”

Hazell said hosting the event would not have been possible without help from the Surf Coast Shire and Geelong Connected Communities.

McFarlane is one of the most successful players in the championship’s history but has never won a title in the region.

Hazell said McFarlane would again be the one to beat.

“We are hoping he can deliver the goods and win it on his own soil,” he said.

Play starts at 11.30am on Monday and 8.30am on Tuesday. Hazell said spectators are welcome.
