Chief Commission­er Graham Ashton has been reluctant to talk about the case but when pressed in June confirmed Sano taskforce detectives were investigat­ing multiple sexual abuse allegation­s made against Cardinal Pell.

It was revealed in February the taskforce was investigat­ing allegation­s that he had sexually abused up to 10 boys between 1978 and 2001 in his time as a priest in Ballarat and when he was archbishop of Melbourne.

Following that report, Cardinal Pell wrote to the then acting Police Minister Robin Scott requesting an investigat­ion into how the details became public.

Mr Ashton then referred the matter to Victoria’s Independen­t Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission.
