Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has been reluctant to talk about the case but when pressed in June confirmed Sano taskforce detectives were investigating multiple sexual abuse allegations made against Cardinal Pell.
It was revealed in February the taskforce was investigating allegations that he had sexually abused up to 10 boys between 1978 and 2001 in his time as a priest in Ballarat and when he was archbishop of Melbourne.
Following that report, Cardinal Pell wrote to the then acting Police Minister Robin Scott requesting an investigation into how the details became public.
Mr Ashton then referred the matter to Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission.
