City should ask for money back

-

LET’S leave aside the retrospective conspiracy theories. The State Government could not have sacked Geelong council, and gotten away with it, were they a highly effective, functional and civic-minded team.

This they were not. They were a motley lot that many in this region wish would continue quietly into that good night.

Some of them should feel a deep and abiding personal shame for how they failed to serve their community. The less culpable should at the very least feel disquiet over the whole sorry period.

The “Class of 2012” should realise that they have left a bad taste in our mouths. The refusal by some to pay back public money they did not earn (due to being sacked) does nothing to help their selfish, motley image.

We are often critical of City Hall for cavalierly spending our rates — our money.

This time City Hall is seeking its return.

For this they deserve bouquets — not brickbats.
