Tomic crashes out again

- Four-day Surf Forecast:

BERNARD Tomic’s unhappy start to the 2017 ATP Tour season continued in Florida yesterday when the sixthseeded Australian was sent packing from a tournament in the first round for a second consecutive week.

After a promising start in the Delray Beach Open, Tomic (pictured) lost to Belgian Steve Darcis 3-6 6-1 6-4. Tomic had a 4-1 lead in the final set but the Belgian world No.57, who had to go through qualifying, reeled off five straight games to take the match.

It was the world No.31’s third first round loss out of four tournaments in 2017 — his only wins coming were the first and second rounds of the Australian Open.

It wasn’t all bad news for Tomic though — it was announced he will play doubles with Australian Open finalist Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells next month. And spending time with the Spanish great on the court could be just what he needs to get his season going.

That’s 17th from the 24 boardriders’ clubs that made the finals in Newcastle and against a national field of around 100 boardriders clubs, so all up, an impressive performance from the Surf Coast club.

Following a classic summer weekend of solid reef surf, we can look forward to more reasonably solid waves in the coming days. Expect small waves today and tomorrow before a new swell fills in over the weekend and waves on the reefs. Not as classic as last weekend because there will be a lot of onshore wind with this swell.
