TOP FIVE GEELONG-COLLINGWOOD TRADES

-

5. Pick 44 (Josh Hunt) for Carl Steinfort, 2000. AFTER five years and 65 games at Kardinia Park, much loved run-with player Carl Steinfort was lured to Victoria Park. After Steinfort impressed the Pies in a tagging job on Nathan Buckley, Mick Malthouse added him, along with other experienced players such as James Clement (Fremantle), Shane Wakelin (St Kilda), Jarrod Molloy (Brisbane) and Brodie Holland (Fremantle). All five recruits would play in Collingwood’s first grand final since 1990. Meanwhile, the Cats would select back pocket Josh Hunt with pick 44, who would go on to play 198 games and land two premierships with Geelong before finishing his career at GWS. 4. Mitch Clark for Travis Varcoe (via Heritier Lumumba) AT the end of 2014, Geelong, Collingwood and Melbourne would compile a simple three-way trade to satisfy all their needs. The Cats would land former Demon Mitch Clark, sending small forward Travis Varcoe to the Pies, who would in turn depart with Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne. But by the end of 2016, Lumumba and Clark would both be delisted, while Varcoe had produced two of his best career seasons at Collingwood. 3. Chris Scott for Nathan Buckley WE’RE being a bit cheeky here, but it was Geelong coach and defender Chris Scott whom the Brisbane Bears landed with pick 12 of the 1993 draft, sent to them from Collingwood in exchange for inaugural Rising Star Nathan Buckley. Buckley would go on to become a champion of the game, playing 280 AFL games and logging a Brownlow Medal, but ultimately Scott would win two premierships with Brisbane before joining Fremantle as an assistant coach. 2. Neil Balme THE dual premiership player with Richmond joined former teammate Mick Malthouse at Collingwood in 2000, helping to turn the Pies from perennial cellar dwellers to grand finalists in three years. But in 2007, Geelong lured Balme to Kardinia Park where he oversaw three premierships and a grand final as football operations manager. Balme then returned to Collingwood before joining the Tigers this year. 1. Brenton Sanderson for pick 47 (Robbie Ahmat) AFTER his six games in two seasons at Adelaide, Collingwood brought Sanderson across for one season, but he managed just four games before finding himself on the trade table again. Geelong would swoop, exchanging pick 47 for Sanderson, who would reinvent himself into a running defender for the Cats. He played 199 games at Geelong, winning the club’s best and fairest in 2001, before taking up a coaching career, working as one of Mark Thompson’s assistants from 2007-11. Robbie Ahmat managed 67 games at Collingwood.
