Winter Shiraz Weekend promises a warm welcome

-

WINERIES across Greater Geelong and the Surf Coast are preparing to invite grape lovers to their cellar doors to join them for the third year of Winter Shiraz Weekend — a celebration of Geelong wine.

Wineries will give guests the chance to soak up the warmth of open fires and outdoor braziers in beautiful surroundings while showing off their award-winning shiraz.

Wine Geelong executive officer Sally Vickers said chefs would match the region’s renowned cool-climate wines with hearty winter fare.

“You have the chance to ‘meet the makers’ with knowledgeable local vignerons and producers leading you on a path of wine discovery, take a tour in the three sub-regions — the Bellarine, Moorabool Valley and Surf Coast — and visit as many of the participating wineries as you like,” she said.

As part of this year’s event, there will be a special Friday night tasting at some of Geelong’s top wine retailers.

“They will give you a taste of what is to come and help you plan your weekend visit. But don’t just go for a day, book some local accommodation and make a weekend of it,” she said.

“You can also book yourself a designated driver for the day with For the Love of Grape specialised wine tours.”

Ms Vickers said this year’s event promised to be a feast of food and wine experiences, gourmet produce, local music and wine master classes.

“Entry to participating wineries is free so you can take home some local wine instead of worrying about ticket prices,” she said.

“So throw off your jacket, take up a place by the fire with a glass of wine and enjoy a reprieve from the cold.”

The Winter Shiraz Weekend is scheduled to run from July 8-9.
