Modda wary of flying Grubbers

MODEWARRE will not be feeling any additional pressure to maintain its unbeaten start to the season when it takes on Ocean Grove this weekend.

But Warriors coach Matt Armstrong concedes that with the exception of Torquay and Portarlington, his team is yet to face a top-five team in the opening seven weeks.

The Grubbers have won four straight games and sit in third position on the BFL lad- der, and Armstrong knows his team will have to be switched on from the start of the game to avoid defeat.

“They’re close to full strength so if we lapse in any area they will find us out. A good side like that will be able to capitalise,” Armstrong said.

“It’s a good feeling (at Modewarre) but we haven’t played Ammos yet or Ocean Grove, they’re two of the form sides in the competition that we haven’t played, so we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves

“It would be nice to get this one under our belt and then we have Ammos in a few weeks, so we’ll get those out of the way and then set up for the second half of the year.”

Modewarre is top of the table with a percentage of 184.8 but sensationally crashed out of the finals last year after finishing in second spot.

Armstrong said that while it hadn’t been a discussion point within his team, he would be surprised if it wasn’t a motivating factor in the Warriors’ sensational start.

“It hasn’t been spoken about but you just get that feeling that it would have to drive them,” he said.

“It wasn’t a nice way to go out and it would just be human nature to want to make amends for that.”

Armstrong praised the work of shooter Kim Martin, who has shot 253 goals at 81.61 per cent accuracy this season.

“She has been one of our big recruits and there was a lot of expectation on her,” he said.

“She hasn’t let anyone down and has been shooting around 80 per cent.”
