BOMB BOT CALLED IN

- ERIN PEARSON

A HOMEMADE taser sparked a bomb scare at the Geelong police station yesterday.

The rear of the Mercer St police station was sealed off for more than five hours after an offender’s car was towed to the premises and the suspicious device found inside.

Officers from the force’s bomb squad were called to investigate.

Detective Senior Constable Paul Michell said the car had been discovered during a random attempted intercept.

A search of the silver Mitsubishi Pajero about 9am yester- day uncovered more than $20,000 cash, a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine and weapons.

“Officers from Lara noticed a vehicle acting erratically and attempted to intercept it when the driver turned off, dumped the vehicle in a driveway and fled down Macedon Ave in Corio,” he said.

“The car was brought back to the station and under the back seat a suspicious device was discovered, a trafficable quantity of ice and a sawn-off shot gun.

“Investigations are continuing into who was the driver of the car. It was not a stolen car.”

Police were forced to seal off the area before specialist of- ficers from the state’s bomb squad arrived to X-ray the device, using the team’s robot.

The device was eventually deemed safe about 2pm.

Acting Senior Sergeant Leanne Rayner said further inquiries were being made in order to track down the driver of the Pajero, who fled on foot from the Corio scene.
