Inexperienced Blues are feeling the pressure

WINCHELSEA coach Brendan Forssman says his side will be challenged mentally if its gets into a tight finish with Belmont tomorrow.

The Blues have suffered two narrow defeats this season — eight points to North Geelong and four points to East Geelong — which Forssman blamed on a lack of experience in tight games.

The first-year coach said his side required a close win to help wipe those demons.

“We’re coming from a pretty low base on the last couple years,” Forssman said.

“I think it’s more a mental thing, when we get in a position to win (we need to) just take advantage of it.

“We’re a little bit up and down at the moment. Our first half was pretty good last week against Inverleigh, we just weren’t able to sustain it for four quarters. The game against East Geelong I thought we were a little bit scrappy. We’ve had a couple of close losses and I think it was more a mental thing than physical or way we need to play.”

The Blues face the Lions this week, followed by Geelong West, Anakie and Thomson in a month that is set to define the club.

But Forssman said his team wouldn’t go into any game SOUTH COLAC v WESTERN EAGLES expecting to collect four points. “It’d be nice to get a win this week and see where it takes us over the next few weeks, (but) we have to work pretty hard for it and do a few things right,” he said.

“The next month is pretty important for us; we play most of the teams around us on the ladder, that’ll probably give us a better indication of how we’re tracking, the next four weeks. “Saturday’s just going to be one of those days whoever brings that intensity for four quarters will probably get the result. We can’t go into any game thinking we can just turn up and win.”

The Lions have logged just one win to the Blues’ two, but Forssman expected his opponents to be eyeing a scalp.

“There’s a big gap after the top three teams and the rest of the competition is pretty even.’’ BIRREGURRA v IRREWARRA-BEEAC TEAM W LD % PTS
