One of the highlights of the service includes the Special Care Nursery, which, hopefully, most parents will not have to use but in case of any complicati­ons, it is manned with lifesaving equipment and some of the region’s best medical profession­als.

Epworth Geelong and Geelong Children’s Clinic paediatric­ian Philippa Shilson said the nursery had everything needed to provide specialist neo-natal care for fragile or premature babies.

“Occasional­ly when newborns are very premature, they need to stay in a neo-natal intensive care unit in Melbourne until they are medically stable, and this can be a stressful time for families,” Dr Shilson said.

“The Special Care Nursery at Epworth Geelong has an ideal set up to provide followon care for these fragile babies, once they are well enough to leave intensive care and continue their recovery closer to home.”

Every detail of patient care looks to have been thought of, down to restaurant quality meals from head chef Luiz Pinheiro, which includes dishes such as grilled salmon with confit cherry tomatoes and shiitake mushrooms.
