One of the highlights of the service includes the Special Care Nursery, which, hopefully, most parents will not have to use but in case of any complications, it is manned with lifesaving equipment and some of the region’s best medical professionals.

Epworth Geelong and Geelong Children’s Clinic paediatrician Philippa Shilson said the nursery had everything needed to provide specialist neo-natal care for fragile or premature babies.

“Occasionally when newborns are very premature, they need to stay in a neo-natal intensive care unit in Melbourne until they are medically stable, and this can be a stressful time for families,” Dr Shilson said.

“The Special Care Nursery at Epworth Geelong has an ideal set up to provide followon care for these fragile babies, once they are well enough to leave intensive care and continue their recovery closer to home.”
