Boys escape injury in P-plater hit and run

- HARRISON TIPPET

A MOOLAP Mum is on the hunt for the driver of a car that hit a young boy over the weekend and fled the scene without helping.

Mother Chloe Wellam said her 12-year-old son and his friend were left shaken after one of them was hit by a car and knocked from his bike at the Bellarine Village Shopping Centre in Newcomb about 3pm on Saturday. “Apparently the driver was quite aggressive and was abusing them before it, following them,” Ms Wellam said. “They’d been at Hungry Jack’s for lunch, and as they’ve gone to leave apparently he followed them in the car park yelling abuse at them and hit the back wheel of the bike, knocking the child off the bike.

“His wheel was sitting on top of the bike and has had to reverse off it. He’s taken off quite angry and left the boys there without checking on them.”

Ms Wellam said the bike was damaged but the boys were unharmed.

“By the time they’d got home they were quite upset and quite shaken from the incident,” she said. “Luckily they weren’t injured, no grazes or anything like that, but the back wheel of the bike has been clearly run over and is quite damaged.

“But it’s lucky it wasn’t one of the kids underneath the car.”

Ms Wellam said she had called police after the incident but was unable to get much information about the car or driver from the shaken boys.

She appealed for witnesses online. Bystanders said the car was a silver sedan — believed to be a Mitsubishi Lancer — with green P-plates.

One witness claimed the driver was a ”very clean young looking bloke” with dark hair, wearing black pants, Nike runners and a black and grey top. The witness claimed he had seen the driver and another male leaving Dan Murphy’s liquor store before getting into the car.

Ms Wellam yesterday said she had reported the new details to police, but Geelong police members were yesterday unable to find any information on the incident.

‘It’s lucky it wasn’t one of the kids underneath the car.
