Club on track with new stable build

- RYAN REYNOLDS

GEELONG Racing Club is confident its new stables will be completed by the end of next month.

It headlines the start of a busy period for the club which is getting ready for an influx of meetings on its synthetic track while also preparing for October’s Geelong Cup.

Chief executive Daniel Salter said the two-stable complex was slightly behind schedule but he expected it to be com- pleted by July. The stables will house trainers who are currently across the road at the Haworth Crt complex, which was recently sold to start the new build.

There is room to expand the complex in the future and Salter said he has had positive discussions with a number of trainers who could relocate to the area.

“There is already some interest,” Salter said.

“We will build the two new stables at the moment. But hopefully we can build some more in the next few years.

“The first priority is to house the trainers from Haworth Crt and that’s what we are doing. But with the dramas in Warrnambool and Caulfield possibly closing down, there are some trainers getting on the front foot early and seeing what options they are going to have.

“Geelong presents a pretty good option for them with the beaches and that sort of thing. “It’s really exciting.” Salter said the club was also hopeful of securing funding for renovations to its sand and synthetic tracks.

He said the club would find out next month if that application was successful.

“We are hoping to get the green light to get that upgraded in the next few months,” Salter said.

“The industry are doing a review of the synthetic track at the moment and we put in a request to have our sand track upgraded. The feedback has been pretty positive at the moment.”

The next Geelong races are on Friday of next week.
