Exhibitions set to draw in art lovers

- SHANE FOWLES

ANGLESEA’S burgeoning artistic movement will be on full display with two major exhibitions showing over the long weekend.

The 32nd annual Anglesea Art and Craft Show was officially launched last night, with works by more than 70 artists hanging through to Monday at the Community Hall.

Mediums such as oil, watercolour, pastel, print and a variety of craft will be available to view and buy, exhibition co-ordinator Pat McKenzie said.

“Most locals will proudly purchase their favourite piece to display at home, and visitors walk away with a souvenir that not only supports local artists but is authentic, local and beautiful,” she said.

Exhibiting artists were to be judged last night in a range of categories by Bellbrae-based artist Catherine Brennan, while a prized People’s Choice Award will be decided by public vote.

The annual exhibition has come a long way since its debut, which was used to showcase the work of five artists who had formed the Anglesea Art Group.

Anglesea is also hosting a creative collective from Torquay, who are taking their eclectic works to the neighbouring coastal town for a three-week exhibition.

Ashmore Arts, which hosts 18 artists in a range of studios and sheds, has taken over the Surf Coast Art Space on the Great Ocean Road.

The Art Space, which has been going from strength to strength since it opened last September, is generally open Friday to Sunday but will also host visitors on Monday’s public holiday.

The Ashmore team is showcasing a wildly diverse collection of work until June 25.

Among the artists featured will be: Natalie Martin (illustrator), Glen Hunwick (animator, sculptor), Mark Trinham (painter, sculptor/public art), Chela Edmunds (ceramist), Pete Cromer (happy art creator), Nick Lindsay (concrete and wooden furniture maker), David Graham (blacksmith) and Ellise Roberts (textile designer).
