DRIVERS’ DISGRACE

POLICE BLITZ: Multiple drug-drivers, 14yo busted behind wheel

- CLAIRE MARTIN

GEELONG police have been left frustrated after intercepting a series of drug-drivers over the long weekend.

Police also caught a 14year-old boy driving in Belmont.

Sergeant Darryn Murphy said the boy was caught on Saturday.

“He was intercepted not far from his home address,” Sgt Murphy said.

“We’ve had an ongoing complaint in relation to him and he’ll be summoned in relation to unlicensed driving.”

Police said a 40-year-old man drove to the scene where he tried to intervene.

He later tested positive to methamphetamine and will now face drug-driving charges.

Highway patrol officers detected eight mobile phone in- fringements, two fail to wear a seat belt, two unregistered vehicles and two unlicensed drivers in Geelong on Friday night.

“It’s been fairly busy and (Saturday night) we detected three drug-drivers in just eight hours,” Sgt Murphy said.

“The results we’ve seen are a bit disappointing, especially on Friday night where I believe there were eight infringements for mobile phone use.”

He said mobile phone use while driving was a dangerous distraction and should stop, as should drug-driving.

There were several incidents across the weekend including three car crashes on Friday night.

One of the serious collisions was in Bell Post Hill, with police seeking witnesses after two passengers were taken to hospital.

Sgt Murphy encouraged motorists coming home from the long weekend to take care.

“It’ll be the end of long weekend and people need to drive safe and be patient,” he said. “The roads will be busy heading home and we want to make sure everyone gets home safe.”
