- NORTH SHORE GEELONG WEST Goals: North Shore — West Giants — Giants — Geelong Best: North Shore — Geelong West JESSICA LEADER

K. Aguila 14, S. Todd 3, E. Anderson 3. K. Allan 34, R. Palmer-Brennan 29, J. Leader 4. J. Lanigan, K. Aguila, L. Hine. Not submitted. GEELONG West Giants coach Catherine Gillespie believes her side is just getting started after posting a strong 47-goal win over North Shore on Saturday.

The Giants haven’t had the smoothest start to the season, but Gillespie hopes the 67-20 victory will be a catalyst for a charge up the ladder.

“We go into every game focused on our game plan, this week we needed to stick to the basics, work the ball into the circle and play four quarters of high intensity netball,” Gillespie said.

“It showed in the scores that we were consistent every quarter, rather than becoming complacent and falling back to our bad habits, which we have been doing recently.”

The Giants squad is starting to come together, after going down by only five goals to top-three side St Albans last week in an encouraging performance.

Gillespie is confident her side is getting stronger round by round.

“At the beginning of the season we had a great group of players on paper, and that’s all we were, we had never played together before,” Gillespie said. “We now look like a team out on court, and we’re playing some great netball.

“Now that we’re playing together and we’re playing together well, I’m really looking forward to the next few rounds.”

The Seagulls are coming off a similar base to the Giants — a new side that was put together at the beginning of the year.

“We’ve got a whole new line up so the last couple of weeks we have really been focusing on integrating those new players into the game and consolidating that,” coach Renee Scott said.

“We have been focusing on putting out four quarters and playing like a unit.

“This year we have also been able to bring up some B-grade players, which adds to the depth of our squad. Today, we were really tough defensively, and we played like a team.”
