Tigers snatch a break

- JESSICA LEADER

TORQUAY coaching staff will not rest on their laurels after building on their form with a seven-goal win over Barwon Heads on Saturday.

It was a classic eight-point game between two sides on the fringe of finals contention, but the Tigers came out firing and finished on top with a 46-39 win.

“We can’t get slack, we need to focus on the game at hand and the plan we have to win that game,” assistant coach Sonia Harris said.

“For now, it’s being patient and treasuring possession, if we can do that, we can win (most games).”

The Tigers’ sixth win of the year sees them move a game clear of the Seagulls in fifth, but Anglesea (sixth) and Portarlington (seventh) also sit 5-5, breathing down the Tigers’ necks.

Harris credited calm heads for the important win.

“Barwon Heads are a strong, smart side, and they contest the ball well,” she said. “It was imperative that we stuck to our game plan. Being disciplined and patient in attack has added another element to our game, and that got us across the line.”

The Seagulls were left to lament a slow opening quarter in which Torquay outscored them 11-6. “We had a really slow start today, which put us behind for the rest of the game, we had to play catch up, which isn’t a position we like to be in,” Barwon Heads coach Olivia Wilson said.

But the playing-coach was confident that her side could still make a play for the top four.

“There were some brilliant passages of play today, which shows that we are getting stronger as a team, especially against quality opposition like Torquay,” Wilson said.

“We are fighting for a position in the top four, we have the players to get there. All we need to do is play consistently well at high intensity.”
