JOEYS RIDING HIGH IN GFL

Jamieson says club hungry

IS St Joseph’s the best football team in local football?

After nine rounds of the GFL season it would be hard to argue against, but coach Heath Jamieson believes his men are yet to earn the title.

But a clinical dismantling of premier Leopold after quartertime, to the tune of 42 points, went a long way to stamping Joeys as the side to beat.

“We want to be back to the best footy club in Geelong,” Jamieson said,

“We’re not there yet, we don’t hold that title, we don’t get carried away being on top of the ladder. We’ll keep working hard until we’re there on that final day.”

After trailing by 20 points at the first change, and with captain Ben Capra sidelined 10 minutes into the match, the undefeated powerhouse lifted a gear to run rampant against the Lions in a heated encounter.

The home side drew within five points of Leopold at the main break before kicking 10 of the next 14 goals to prevail comfortably.

“We know Leopold is a really good side so we’ll take a seven-goal win over them any day,” Jamieson said.

“We’ve played Leopold, St Mary’s, Bell Park — quite a few good sides — now and we’ve come out on top quite well, so we’re in a really good position.

“We’re not going to get carried away with that; we know it’s a long year.”

Now clearly the hunted side, and with more than half a season still to play out, he said his side needed to remain hungry.

“We’ve been in this position before, we know how to drive the bus for a long season and we have to continue to recover well, train well and play well,” he said.

“It’s a long grind but the reward at the end of it is fantastic, and that’s where we want to get back to.

“I’m hungry for that — I love winning, our players love winning and they also got a wake up call last year. When our training habits and everything slipped, we fell back to the pack.

“We know we’ve got to be hungry. We’ve got to turn up when it’s cold and wet at training and put in the hard yards and slog it out because we know the thing you get at
