St Albans Rd being used as a dragstrip

- ERIN PEARSON

A THOMSON mother says she’s living in fear after a rise in speeding motorists along St Albans Rd culminated in one driver crashing into her front yard.

Annette McIntosh said she’d lived on St Albans Rd for nine years and families were increasingly worried about letting their children and grandchildren play front yards.

“While it’s a 60km/h zone, it’s also a major thoroughfare between the eastern suburbs and the Geelong CBD and people see it as a good area to put the foot down,” she said.

“Two months ago a car crashed into a parked car and now we’ve had one come through and almost land in our house.

“The speeds, they seem to in their be escalating. You hear them coming.”

Last week a driver abandoned an injured passenger in an overturned car when he fled a crash in Thomson.

The Holden Commodore swerved across St Albans Rd at high speed before taking out two front fences and coming to rest on its roof in the front yard of a house, rolling numerous times.

Fence palings were left em- bedded in the wreckage of the car and a 4m tree was ripped from the ground.

Ms McIntosh said the crash destroyed her fence and shattered front windows due to flying debris.

She said the only reason the family weren’t home was a stop at a family member’s house.

“The council needs to put in a speed trap, speed humps or a roundabout to slow traffic, particularly at night,” she said.

“When you’re on the other end of the street near Carr and Garden streets they don’t go nearly as fast, but we’ve got 3km of straight road with only one side of residential.

“On Sundays the area is full of pedestrians from the market at the showgrounds.”

Sgt Peter Radford urged residents to take down times and days when hoon behaviour was at its highest so police could address the issues.
