KILLER INSTINCTS

Geelong will be first stop on a national tour when singer-songwriter Dan Sultan takes his Killer act on the road

DAN Sultan is bringing his killer onstage presence to Geelong.

The Melbourne muso will kick off his national tour at the Wool Exchange to support his fourth studio album Killer, which will be released next month.

The album, touted as a “sophisticated leap forward” for the singer-songwriter, boasts the new single Hold It Together.

Sultan’s Geelong gig will come just days after what is sure to be a killer set at Byron Bay’s Splendour in the Grass festival.

With a full three years between releases, Sultan revealed he was happy to take his time in creating Killer.

“It’s been a long process to make the album, looking back on it all,” Sultan said.

“I’ve spent a long time working on this record. With the writing, it was all about evolving — I wasn’t even necessarily thinking about the album as such, I was just writing for the sake of writing, and the album made itself known over time.”

Hold It Together takes a personal tale of Sultan’s, winding it into a larger narrative — a formula that has featured in many of his most well received works.

The song has already been enjoyed by audiences on Double J and Triple J among the rest of Australia’s emerging music.

The album Killer, recorded in Melbourne with producer and longtime collaborator Jan Skubiszewski, will be an 11-track offering from Sultan.

Also including previously released track Magnetic, the album introduces a much more reflective range of lyrics, examining the ups and downs of life, while instrumentally it is much more diverse, with the introduction of synthesisers and drum machines to create more intense rhythms, sounds and emotions.

This wider range of elements is enabling him to perform with a full band backing him in his Geelong show.

“It’s a whole new show — New music, new band, new vibe.” Sultan said. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it.” Dan Sultan will play at the Wool Exchange on September 1. Tickets from thewoolexchange.com.au
