Warriors’ new goal for Ammos

- RYAN REYNOLDS BFL NETBALL

MODEWARRE coach Matt Armstrong is wary of getting into a shootout with powerhouse Geelong Amateur today, despite his Warriors boasting a venomous goaling third.

The second-placed Warriors have scored 48 more goals than league leader Ammos this season, but have also leaked the second most goals of all teams in the top four.

Armstrong said the best way to secure a crucial four points would be to contain Ammos rather than jumping into a toe-to-toe battle. “If we got into a shootout we would probably be concerned that our defensive pressure wasn’t there. I’d be looking at trying to stem their flow of goals and not letting it turn into a shootout,” Armstrong said.

“From my point of view you wouldn’t want to get in a shootout with those (Ammos) girls because they are strong down there as well.

“They’ve got three quality shooters (Breda and Maeve O’Kane and Kate Schippers) . . . we just need to get on top of them and stem their flow.”

Modewarre has lost just one match this season with that coming at the hands of thirdplaced Ocean Grove.

Armstrong admits his team had failed its first big test of 2017 in that loss, but said today was a chance to bounce back.

“We played some pretty average netball against Ocean Grove,” he said. “From Ocean Grove, we took a lot out of that game. We’ve been working hard the last two or three weeks to (get rid) of the errors from that game.

“Probably the second half against Portarlington and the last three quarters against Queenscliff, we showed some really good signs.

“We’ve got to put it together against the likes of Ammos and Ocean Grove when we play them next.”

Kim Martin will again shoulder most of Modewarre’s scoring load, while Laura McClelland has been in sizzling form this year.

“She is playing absolute blinders. She is reading the play well and her bodywork in the circle has been good too,” Armstrong said. “She has really stepped up. “Kim Martin is also holding her own in the scoring end, while Lauren Lapsley in the midcourt is providing not only the drive, but also the defensive effort as well.”
