Fight for theatre’s next stage

- NICHOLAS PAYNE

FOUR companies have been short-listed to duke it out for the $38.5 million GPAC redevelopment project, with the State Government expected to hand down the contract in August.

Work on the Geelong Performing Arts Centre revamp is slated for the third quarter of 2017.

It will transform the 36-yearold centre into a major cultural hub, featuring more rehearsal areas and spaces for the community to use, as well as better access to the Arts Centre.

The modernised building will open on to a new two-level foyer, which will connect to the rear of the Playhouse and the Church.

A new music/cabaret venue will be housed in the Church, capable of holding about 150 people.

The redevelopment will also expand and improve rehearsal facilities, offer two new dance studios and provide a new floor for creative industries offices.

ADCO Constructions, Built Pty Ltd, Cockram Construction Ltd and Kane Constructions Pty Ltd have been short-listed for the project.

All four have engaged in major projects in the Geelong region, including Built with the under-construction 14-storey WorkSafe headquarters, Kane Constructions on the Simonds Stadium redevelopment, ADCO Constructions with the Leopold Gateway Shopping Centre, and Cockram Construction with the Deakin University Regional Community Health Hub.

Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said the GPAC project was yet another vote of confidence in the future of Geelong.

“The new facilities at GPAC will improve Ryrie St and provide opportunities for business, tourists and locals,” Ms Neville said.

GPAC is Victoria’s only stateowned cultural institution outside of Melbourne, and more than 200,000 people attend performances at the centre each year.
