Duncan thinks safety

GEELONG players, including ambassador Mitch Duncan, will share the Just Think message this weekend by donning orange-banded socks in Sunday’s game against Fremantle.

The Just Think program is in its 10th year, launched by James Kelly, Tom Harley and David Wojcinski in 2008 after a story aired on 60 Minutes about Geelong supporter James Macready Bryan, who was assaulted in Melbourne on a night out on his birthday.

Duncan, along with Cam Guthrie and Zac Smith, are now ambassadors for the Just Think program.

“Really proud that the club puts on these types of campaigns that give back to the community,” Duncan said.

“When ‘ Harls’ finished a spot opened and I thought it was a great initiative; a lot of violence is fuelled by alcohol and if you can get the message to the kids to be safe and be healthy, it’s a great message.”

Duncan said the campaign was all about educating young Australians to “Just Think” before a night out by pre-planning a lift home, drinking responsibly and taking care of your friends.

“In the footy world, you probably can’t go out as much as the average punter, but it’s about spreading that message of what impact alcohol can have,” he said.

“We’re not saying, ‘Don’t drink’, because it’s great to get out and be social with your friends. It’s just those things to think about before you go out — making sure you have a ride home, looking after your mates — and just those little things that can cue you to be safe.”

Orange goal flags will don all suburban grounds in the AFL Barwon region, while the Bell Park v Newtown & Chilwell game at Hamlyn Park will be the Just Think match of the round.
