Warriors’ fate now in hands of Torquay

- LACHIE YOUNG BFL

MODEWARRE assistant coach Chris Carlon has conceded a Geelong Amateur victory over Torquay on Saturday would all but rule out his team’s top three chances this year.

With Ammos currently a game and percentage clear of the Warriors, four points in the stand-alone clash would effectively put Modewarre three games behind with just five left to play.

Carlon said backing up from a win away from home against Barwon Heads with a 16-point loss to Anglesea on Sunday was incredibly disappointing.

“It’s really frustrating, we know that our best is good enough and obviously for the first 11 rounds we were trying to find our best and couldn’t quite get there,” Carlon said.

“We were still getting over the line in games but (against Anglesea) we just didn’t fire a shot at all, so it is very disappointing.

“You don’t want to rely on other results to get yourself there (the top three) but we’ve put ourselves in the position where we have to, so let’s hope Torquay does the job for us.”

With a league bye — except the Ammos and Tigers match — clubs will be using the next fortnight to either refresh or put some more kilometres into players’ legs ahead of the last month of football before finals.

Carlon said Modewarre would be in the latter group, and added that key forwards Luke Forbes (knee/hamstring) and Chris Mamalis (hip) could return for the Newcomb game in Round 14.

“We’ll train as per usual and obviously we have got some skill issues to work around, but they need to stay together,” he said.

“If you send them away now on a bad note it’s hard to keep the group together and keep working forward together.

“We’re expecting Forbes back after the break, but with Mamalis we’re just assessing him week by week. He has had it for a long time.”
