Parish pleases, Worpel wows for Vic Country
GEELONG Falcons talent manager Michael Turner says Cassidy Parish proved any doubters wrong after making the most of his Vic Country call-up.
Vic Country’s under-18 carnival ended with a disappointing 16.15 (111) to 9.11 (65) loss against South Australia at Simonds Stadium last night, but Falcons teammates Parish, James Worpel and Sam Walsh were their side’s leading ball-winners.
The prolific Worpel was later awarded Vic Country’s MVP award, a glowing endorsement of his capacity after averaging more than a dozen tackles a game.
“He was outstanding,” said Falcons coach Danny O’Keefe, who was part of the Vic Country coaching staff.
“He showed all the traits and all the values of what’s expected of a Vic Country player and his defence-first attitude and willingness to win and his selflessness are all part of what it takes to play for Vic Country.”
Walsh had a game-high 24 possessions, while Worpel and Parish had 22 each. Worpel also showed the trademark contested side of his game, winning eight clearances in a performance that proved his long-held standing as a potential firstround selection.
Parish, who made his debut midway through the carnival, was among a group of 10 Falcons who represented Vic Country across the championships, underlining the region’s stunning depth and quality.
“There was a little bit of conjecture about (Parish’s place in the side) but he’s done really well, he’s had high possessions,” Turner said.
Turner described Worpel’s carnival as “outstanding”. Worpel and Walsh are seen as leading contenders for All-Australian selection, while Gryan Miers may also sneak in.
Matt Ling’s draft credentials have also solidified with a couple of strong efforts at the higher level.
“Sam Walsh was outstanding,” Turner said. “And people have got to remember he’s only a bottom-age player playing on some really great players.”
