CATS DO IT TOUGH
GEELONG’S VFL Women’s side is three goals off the league’s top four teams, according to coach Paul Hood.
The Cats have dropped their past four matches after opening the season with three wins, as the VFLW ladder finally sorts itself out.
“It looks like some of the established teams now are working their way up towards the top of the ladder,” Hood said.
“The rest of us are just doing our best to improve our position as we go along.
“We’re at the halfway point so there’s still a lot of footy to be played I suppose.”
But the Cats sit in seventh, two games off the fifth-placed Saints who Geelong failed to overcome last weekend.
“It was a good performance; in hindsight we did really well, particularly to keep St Kilda to four goals,” he said.
“We’re probably about three goals off most of those top-four sides.
“Looking at how we’ve gone in our last three weeks against Spurs, Melbourne Uni and St Kilda, I think if you average out how far away we were in those three, it’s about 18 points.
“It might take us a little bit of time to catch up to that level this season but certainly competing against those sides when we get the chance.” Hood said his side was still learning general game play, but hadn’t lost morale following a winless month.
“I think, for us, ball movement is one of the main things, and really acknowledging the state of the game, looking to see how many players we’ve actually got ahead of the ball and looking if we can go ahead right now or wait a little bit for it to catch up; a bit of game sense I guess across the whole team,” he said.
“We’d obviously like to win, it makes everyone feel better when you get a little bit of success, but they’re such an enthusiastic group of girls, so getting them excited and working hard at training is not a challenge at all.”
Hood said that he would be freshening up the side ahead of tomorrow’s game to winless Seaford away from home.
