LEWIS LEAVES WARRIORS AT CRITICAL TIME

- ANTE JUKIC NPL1 SOCCER

WITH North Geelong’s most important matches of the season coming up, Darren Lewis has left Elcho Park, signing for North Sunshine this week.

Lewis is the Eagles’ second signing for the State League One mid-season transfer window, joining former teammate Reardo Luka, after 113 appearances in six seasons at Elcho Park.

Playing through injury amid a decimated squad on the way to a best-and-fairest award last season, the defender risked osteitis pubis and despite not needing sur- gery over the summer, has battled with fitness ever since.

Given North Geelong’s currently precarious position, fighting to avoid relegation in NPL1, the timing of his decision has evidently left a bitter taste.

On Wednesday, the Warriors confirmed the departure via their social media channels and wished Lewis all the best.

“The talismanic figure was an integral member of the squad both on and off the park for the Warriors,” a club statement said.

“Injuries over the summer hampered his fitness, restricting him to nine appearances in what has been a frustrating campaign for the 30-year-old.

“North Geelong would like to wish ‘Dazza’ every success in his future endeavours.”

The Warriors post has since been deleted.

Warriors coach Micky Colina also verified Lewis’ exit, but did admit he was let down.

“Sure, Darren’s had a tough season, but it couldn’t have come at a worse time. I’ll be honest in saying we’re disappointed,” he said

“I understand players have different opportunities and he’s at a time in his life where he has to think about matters off the park more.

“Darren’s been a great servant for North Geelong. Obviously, he was there before I even arrived but he added a lot of value. His leaving took us by surprise.”

Facing second-placed South Melbourne at Elcho Park this afternoon, this episode would seemingly not make it the most ideal preparation for the Warriors.

Andrew Doig and Matthew Thorne will be out via suspension.

But Colina believes his side is ready to cause an upset.

“Tuesday’s session was a good one and Thursday was a great one. There’s still a positive vibe and the boys are up for the challenge in South. In competitive football, these are the games you want to play,” he said.
