Winchelsea pennant power

-

WINCHELSEA continues to fight well out of its weight division.

The thriving country golf club celebrated its pennant feats recently, with three of their teams claiming flags this season.

Winchelsea’s junior pennant team — featuring Lachie Bath, Nick Trezise, Cooper Nelson, Holly Kilmartin and Harry Smith. — claimed the Trevenen Shield and the Ford Cup in a fruitful season.

The women’s team of Elaine Daniels, Carol Stanesby, Sue Cuthbert, Elizabeth Alston, Robyn Vesey, Di Bennett and Chris Thompson scored the Leigh flag.

The men’s Division 5 team of Michael Hedger, Andrew Black, Matt Tench, Brent Kahle, Darren Russell, Matt Trezise and Bath also tasted success.

Secretary Greg Rigby said the club was being rewarded for all its hard work on and off the course.

“We’ve had some good members join and the place is going ahead. We are very progressive for a little club,” Rigby said.

“We fielded three sides in the men’s pennant this year, a Division 3, Division 5 and a handicap division. Some big clubs didn’t field anywhere near that amount of teams.

“About 25 per cent of our membership played pennant.

“It’s a reward for all the hard work done by everyone at the club.

“We’ve improved the course, we’ve worked very hard to lay couch on the fairways. We will have an automatic watering system go into the fairways soon too,” he said.

“As the course improves people are coming. It’s the old saying ‘if you build it they will come’.”

Rigby said the strength of the club’s junior pennant team would hold the club in good shape for the future.

The ladies team went through the pennant season undefeated.
