New civic centre gets under way

- SHANE FOWLES

A NEW civic centre for Bannockburn will have a huge aquatic and adventure element.

Early works have begun on the $2.4 million project, which is expected to take more than two years to come to reality.

Stage one of the development — which has state and federal funding — will be highlighted by 1500 square metres of water areas and adventure play spaces.

Barbecue facilities, shelters, picnic areas, a new carpark, fitness equipment, a paved plaza and improved lighting will also be added.

The project has been talked about for several years, with community consultation held in 2013.

Progress is being seen on the ground, with initial works beginning on the carpark, drainage and new fire services infrastructure.

The playground building and Scouts shed will be relo- cated to a permanent location within the precinct later this year.

Major construction is expected to begin in mid-2018, with the project tipped to be completed in December 2019.

Golden Plains Shire said more public consultation would be held before the details of the water play space and adventure area were finalised.

Other proposed features include: ROCK hop adventure trails, dry and wet creek areas, gardens and paths; A PADDLE pool, interactive fountains, water cannons and water cage; A CREEK where kids can explore rock holes and paddle in a shallow natural area; and, A 2.5 METRE tall mega swing and flying fox.

The unfunded second stage of the project would include a village green, performance stage and further space to expand the Golden Plains Farmers Market.
