Me and my mate Wayne are tight

-

I FOUND myself in a light head spin last week.

No, it wasn’t down to my new health kick (see last week’s column) and, you know, the caffeine and sugar withdrawals ... it was caused by something much better than that.

Wayne Rooney liked one of my tweets. Yes, the Wayne Rooney. You know, the former Manchester United captain and one of England’s greatest players, Wayne Rooney.

First let it be noted that I am a massive Everton fan in the English Premier League. Fanatical even.

My Saturday nights involve staying up to 4am watching the Toffees do their thing. It’s a huge part of my life.

For those who aren’t familiar with the situation, Rooney was an Everton-supporting kid who rose to the top, became too big to stay with us and was sold to Manchester United where he went on to become a global megastar. So when I found out Rooney was returning to the club he loved 13 years after he left, I had to tell the universe how happy I was. So I punched into my phone: “I was gutted the day @WayneRooney left us, but always understood. I never thought 13 years later we’d see him back in blue. What a day.” A few hours later the notification came through that Wayne had “liked it”. And there I was, stunned. Rooney had only liked 431 tweets previously. One of them was mine. Now this isn’t my first touch with fame. I’ve chatted to countless AFL footballers, interviewed Cadel Evans soon after he won the Tour de France, met Fernando Torres and a plethora of other global sporting stars. That may sound like I’m bragging ... and you’re right, I am. I’ve never acted like this before.

But this was different. This was on a totally different level.

This was more than 13 years of being an Everton fan coming out of me.

I quickly took a heap of screenshots before he changed his mind and decided to unlike it and then charged around the office in excitement.

You’d think a 28-year-old grown man wouldn’t become so excited by such trivial things, that’d he’d literally act like a 13-year-old girl who had just met Justin Bieber.

Now I’m stuck in a rut. Who else that’s famous is going to like something I say? Can I come up with anything that will ever top that tweet to Wayne?

I doubt it.
